Our Favourite Museums & Galleries In Bath
One of the things we love most about Bath (aside from the beautiful architecture, great people and top-notch coffee) is just how much there is to explore. For a small city, Bath packs in an incredible amount of culture, with museums and galleries tucked around every corner.
Whether you’re a proud local or just visiting for the weekend, there’s no shortage of inspiring places to soak up your share of history, creativity and charm. From world-famous Roman ruins to quirky collections and riverside art galleries, here’s our pick of Bath’s best museums and galleries.
The Roman Baths – A Must-See (Even If You’ve Been Before)
You can’t talk about culture in Bath without starting with the Roman Baths. They’re iconic for a reason. Right in the heart of the city, this ancient site gives you a fascinating look into life during Roman times – hot springs, clever engineering and all.
It’s one of those places that really brings history to life, with atmospheric rooms, costumed characters wandering about and plenty of interactive education to keep kids (and grown-ups) entertained. And honestly, even if you’ve been before, it’s worth a return visit. There’s always something new to discover.

The Holburne Museum – Art, Elegance and a Lovely Café
At the end of the grand, tree-lined Great Pulteney Street, you’ll find The Holburne – a beautiful museum housed in an 18th-century building, right next to Sydney Gardens. Inside, there’s an eclectic mix of fine art, decorative objects and fascinating exhibitions, all carefully curated to feel welcoming rather than overwhelming.
It’s a peaceful, thoughtful space that feels like a bit of a retreat from the bustle of town. And if you’re not in a rush, the café is a local favourite for coffee, cake and a sunny spot to sit outside.

Victoria Art Gallery – A Creative Gem by the River
Tucked just by Pulteney Bridge, the Victoria Art Gallery is one of those places that’s easy to miss but so worth popping into. It’s home to a brilliant collection of paintings and sculptures – some by well-known names and others by local and emerging artists.
They’ve always got something interesting on, from thought-provoking exhibitions to workshops and talks. And the best bit? The permanent collection is free to explore. Perfect for a spontaneous wander or a creative top-up on your lunch break.

The Fashion Museum – Style Through the Ages
The Fashion Museum is in the process of moving to a new home, but it’s still a big part of Bath’s cultural scene. It’s been home to an extraordinary collection of clothing and accessories, with everything from Georgian gowns to 20th-century icons.
While we wait for its exciting new location to open, keep an eye on temporary exhibitions and pop-ups around the city—you never know where some of Bath’s best-dressed mannequins might turn up next.

The Herschel Museum of Astronomy – Small But Seriously Interesting
This one’s a bit of a hidden gem. The Herschel Museum is set in the former home of William Herschel, the man who discovered the planet Uranus (from his back garden, no less). It’s a small museum, but packed with charm and ideal if you’re into astronomy, music or quirky bits of local history.
The house itself is beautifully preserved, with original furnishings, fascinating scientific instruments and a peaceful little garden that feels like a step back in time.
Location: 19 New King Street, BA1 2BL
The American Museum & Gardens – Something a Bit Different
Set just outside the city centre, the American Museum & Gardens is one of Bath’s most scenic and family-friendly spots. The museum explores the history of America through decorative arts and cultural exhibits, and it’s housed in a gorgeous manor with stunning views over the valley.
What really makes it special, though, is the setting. You’ve got sweeping gardens to explore, regular events and family activities and even an outdoor amphitheatre for live performances. The museum also offers fantastic value with its annual membership – great if you’re local and fancy returning with the kids, or just want a quiet walk and a coffee with a view.
Location: Claverton Manor, BA2 7BD
Make a Day of It
One of the best things about museum-hopping in Bath is how easy it is to get around. Most of these spots are within walking distance of each other, and even the ones a little further out, like the American Museum, are only a short drive or bus ride away.
It’s easy to turn a cultural outing into a full day of exploring. Start with the Roman Baths in the morning, stop for brunch at The Green Rocket, then head over to the Holburne and stroll through Sydney Gardens. Or pair a gallery visit with a riverside walk and a coffee from Colonna & Smalls. There are plenty of options, and plenty of cake along the way.
