A Local’s Guide to the Best Cocktails in Bath

Bath might be best known for its stunning Georgian architecture and Roman heritage, but if you ask us locals, there’s another thing this city does incredibly well… cocktails. From hidden basement bars to rooftop spots, Bath has something to suit every kind of cocktail lover. Whether you’re after a classic Old Fashioned or something a bit more adventurous, you’re in for a treat.

Here at Zest, we’re not just passionate about property—we’re all about celebrating the best of Bath. So if you’re new to the city, planning a move, or just after a fantastic night out, here’s our local’s take on the cocktail bars you absolutely need to try.

    The Dark Horse

Let’s start with a firm favourite: The Dark Horse. Tucked away beneath Kingsmead Square, this moody, candlelit hideaway is as much about the vibe as it is about the drinks – and trust us, both are spot on. The focus here is on local ingredients and seasonal flavours, such as the Smoke Signal, Invisible Ink and Love Letter; all three having featured on their Winter 2025 menu. Voted the best bar in Bath, the Dark Horse is cosy, stylish and feels like a proper secret – even though it’s often buzzing, so we’d recommend booking ahead.

    The Bath Distillery Gin Bar

Love gin? You’ll want to make a beeline for The Bath Distillery Gin Bar on Queen Street. It’s home to the very own Bath Gin distillery, so as you’d expect, the G&Ts here are next level. Downstairs has a relaxed vibe with shelves stacked full of bottles, while upstairs the martini bar offers something a bit more refined. We’d recommend the Italian – a bittersweet mix of Bath Gin, Aperol, Campari and lime. Complex refrreshing, and guaranteed to get the evening off to a lively start.

    Sub 13

Looking for cocktails with a side of glamour? Sub 13 delivers. Voted the best cocktail bar in Bath and set across three levels – including a gorgeous heated terrace –it’s got that laid-back luxury feel and a menu packed with crowd-pleasers. The bartenders know their stuff, whether you’re sticking to the classics or trying something new. We’re big fans of the Fruit Caipirinha – a heady mix of Velho Barreiro Oro cachaça, fresh lime and brown sugar, with a choice between strawberry, raspberry, passionfruit or peach..

    Opium Bar

Step into Opium, and it feels like you’ve left Bath entirely. Hidden beneath Grove Street, this place is full of character, think velvet sofas, quirky décor and a seriously eclectic drinks menu. It’s got a bit of a speakeasy feel, and the cocktails don’t disappoint. One to try? The Joyplant — a beautifully balanced blend of fresh limes, peach liqueur, elderflower & apple juice, topped with Prosecco. It’s perfect for a chilled evening with mates or a cosy date night.

    The Hideout

If you’re more of a whisky lover, The Hideout is calling your name. Found in a small alleyway just off the city centre, this snug little bar is all about celebrating great whisky—but don’t worry, the cocktails are very accessible, even if you’re new to it. Try the Hideout Old Fashioned – made with Evan Williams & WhistlePig blend, maple and bitters, it’s rich, warming, and dramatic. It’s a great spot when you’re in the mood for something a bit more low-key, away from the bustle.

    The Botanist

Over in Milsom Place, The Botanist offers a completely different kind of cocktail experience. It’s bright, botanical and buzzing, with a gorgeous glass-domed setting inside the historic Octagon. Their drinks are creative and often beautifully garnished—so if you’re after something a little Instagram-worthy, this is your place. We love the Sicilian Lady Martini; it’s fruity, fun and seriously refreshing. Bonus points for their great food menu, too – perfect if you’re making a night of it.

    The Ivy Bath Brasserie

For a dash of elegance, it’s hard to beat The Ivy on Milsom Street. The interiors are stunning, and the cocktail menu fits right in – classy, well-crafted and always seasonal. The Somerset Royale is a top pick, balancing local blackcurrant liqueur and red stoke bottle fermented Cider. While The Ivy is popular with diners, the bar is a great destination in its own right—ideal for pre-dinner drinks or a relaxed end to your evening.

    Honouring Bath’s Cocktail Creativity

Of course, this is just a snapshot. One of the things we love most about Bath’s cocktail scene is how diverse and ever-evolving it is. From locally distilled spirits to experimental infusions, there’s always something new to try – and the venues themselves, whether tucked away underground or high above the rooftops, make it all the more exciting.

Cocktails are just the beginning. Bath’s nightlife offers everything from cosy wine bars to buzzing late-night eateries.
