    A Local Guide to Whiteway

A housing estate nestled into the stunning city of Bath, Whiteway sits within the Southdown and Twerton electoral wards, and is renowned throughout the city as being the place to go to catch a good Christmas lights display during the festive season. Whiteway first emerged just before the outbreak of the Second World War, and is now loved as an area with a strong sense of community spirit that focuses on giving back to its local residents.

    Location of Whiteway

Situated in the Southdown and Twerton area, Whiteway is towards the southwest of the city of Bath. Twerton is hidden away under a tunnel just beside Lower Bristol Road, home to Bath City FC, the city’s own football team, while Southdown is around a 30 minute walk from the Bath Abbey.

    Things to Do in Whiteway

Whiteway as a residential area is a wonderful place in terms of its offerings of community activities. The Southside Youth Centre at Kelston View runs regular activities for teenagers and young people, including a boxing club.

Kelston View is also home to the entrance to Bath City Farm, a place that is adored throughout the entire city for its stunning 37-acre plot of land. The farm opens its doors to the public on a regular basis, and is an extremely popular place for families to bring their children, with animals, a play park, walking trails, a farm shop, and a cafe. Admission is always free, but donations to the farm are welcome.

A non-profit organisation, Bath City Farm offers educational, training, and therapeutic sessions to disadvantaged people in the community. The farm also runs the Roots and Shoots preschool group, the Community Playrangers play sessions for older kids, and a group for the elderly called Golden-Oldies, where older residents are invited to come together to sing hit songs of the 50s, 60s, and 70s in the Blagdon Park community room.

There is also PACT (Partners and Communities Together) a group that holds meetings four times each year in Southdown. The meetings are a chance for Whiteway and Southdown locals to raise issues with councillors, the police, and local representatives from other agencies.

There are several religious sites that sit within the area of Whiteway, including the parish of St Barnabas Church on Southdown’s Mount Road. The Southdown Methodist Centre sits not too far from here, at The Hollow, and provides weekly support services to the local residents. There is also the Southside Family Project, which offers counselling and advisory services in their office on St Michael’s Road.
